Kainuu Region recently (2020) updated the RIS3. During the analysis stage, we identified that for Kainuu, the place-based approach was important  to also address structural issues of the economic and research system of the region, crucial for innovation-driven growth.

For example, we identified, that, inter alia,  Kainuu "has an export-oriented specialisation base with relatively low added value;  it faces challenges in the localised clustering structure; it is endowed with research capacities and innovation infrastructure resources one of which is of European importance (LUMI super computer);  it has mature and dynamic measurement technology research & application niches, but interactions with the economic base need to be reinforced". As a result we made a tailored approach addressing these challenges and embedding them into a growth logic.

Three BRIDGES project good practices were mainstreamed into the revised Kainuu RIS3.
