In a bid to improve the urban environment and enhance the conditions of municipal buildings, the Municipality of Neapoli-Sykies has successfully implemented green roofs in four key locations. This progressive initiative was made possible through a relaunched call for interest influenced by the CityZen project and the Regional Development Fund of Central Macedonia. The project falls under Priority Axis 6 of the Regional Operational Programme, 2014-2020, which aims to protect the environment, promote resource efficiency, and enhance urban areas.
The introduction of green roofs has resulted in the creation of new green spaces, covering a total area of 845 m2, strategically placed within densely populated areas of the Municipality. This marks a significant 6.55% increase in the municipal area dedicated to urban agricultural activities. The addition of these green spaces not only contributes to the beautification of the city but also offers numerous benefits to both the microclimate and overall ventilation.
The implementation of green roofs brings about several positive effects on the urban environment, contributing to the urban, architectural, and aesthetic enhancement of Neapoli-Sykies. These green areas play a crucial role in improving the microclimate by reducing heat island effects and enhancing air quality. Furthermore, the positive impacts extend not only to the Municipality's 84,741 residents but also to neighboring municipalities, visitors, building users, and passers-by.
To promote awareness and understanding of green roofs, the Regional Development Fund of Central Macedonia, in collaboration with the Municipality of Neapoli-Sykies, organized educational study visits to the green roofs at the Municipality's Cultural Centre. On March 30, 2023, 15 students from two high schools participated in the first study visit, where they learned about the creation of green roofs and their benefits to the urban environment. Additionally, on April 26, 2023, five stakeholders from the Municipality of Neapoli-Sykies took part in another study visit to the Cultural Centre's green roof.
The Municipality of Neapoli-Sykies has demonstrated its commitment to sustainable urban development through the implementation of green roofs in key municipal buildings. With educational initiatives and future project opportunities on the horizon, Neapoli-Sykies sets an example for other municipalities in promoting environmentally friendly practices and building greener, more livable cities.
