How to know if an economic activity qualifies as environmentally sustainable?
Some answers to this question, in particular regarding circular economy activities, are brought by an new EU Regulation (Regulation EU 2020/852) approved last June by the European Parliament and the Council. It establishes a framework to facilitate sustainable investment. In particular, it:
- sets out a definition of circular economy applying for the purpose of the Regulation itself;
- includes the transition to a circular economy among environmental objectives set out for the purpose of the Regulation;
- sets out criteria to qualify an economic activity as contributing substantially to the transition to a circular economy, including waste prevention, re-use and recycling.
