Most EU regions and cities are striving to increase renewable energy production on their territories to meet EU targets and foster local employment and tax revenues. Cities and regions have a good reason to turn to biogas because biogas can help solve their waste management challenges.
In 2018, the revised Waste Framework Directive introduced stricter rules to guarantee the separate collection of waste streams including biowaste (from 2023). At the same time, it called for the diversion of biodegradable waste from landfill and incineration towards anaerobic digestion and composting as this benefits both the climate and the local communities.
This webinar will showcase how organic waste management with biogas can help to meet the Renewable Energy targets, to become more energy-independent, and to create new local employment in a circular bio-economy.

- Susanna Vanhamäki from LAB University of Applied Sciences (BIOREGIO project) will present the Päijät-Häme Waste Management strategy and the process from separate collection of biowaste to treatment in a biogas and composting plant
- Nikolay Sidjimov from the Bulgarian Association of Municipal Environmental experts (CESME project) will present the co-digestion of kitchen and agricultural waste in the Perpetuum Mobile Albena project
- Volker Kromrey from Bodensee Stiftung (COALESCE project) will present biogas-powered district heating uses local waste streams and contributes to local energy indepence in BIOENERGY-villages
The specific objectives
- To raise awareness among policy makers about the imperative to introduce separate organic waste collection and to properly manage this waste to be in line with EU Directives and targets
- To showcase and examine excellent good practices of biowaste management from selected Interreg Europe project partners
- To discuss the link between waste management, renewable energy and circular economy and its socio-economic benefits
- To enable Interreg Europe project and other local policymakers to exchange knowledge and good pratices on the topic
