Mobile information campaign for activation of a broad public in the rural areas with a self-sufficient exhibition vehicle
Citizens in the rural areas of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern often do not consider digitalisation to be important for their daily lives. In this respect, the acceptance of new digital possibilities is limited. In a thinly-populated land such as MV it is however extremely important for the citizens to have digital competence in order to meet the demographic and environmental challenges.
While the broadband infrastructure in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is expanded in a rapid speed, the fully equipped vehicle “DigiMobil“ is providing an innovative approach to reach out to people affected by low access to digitalisation processes in rural areas of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The gamified approach lets people experience digital transformation in a dialogue with competent staff.
The essential aspects to tackle these challenges are laid down in the Digital Agenda MV. Initial solutions have been developed, but they can only be successful if the population is comprehensively informed and educated. The DigiMobil offers a low-threshold entry point for people with no previous knowledge of digitalisation.
The DigiMobil raises awareness for digital issues, provides information on the Digital Agenda and offers dialogues and networking.
In the DigiMobil visitors can use augmented and virtual reality to find out about the Digital Agenda MV. They find information on broadband expansion, the Digital Innovation Room MV and about technical possibilities at home.

Resources needed

At least two people must be employed per day of operation. In addition, office staff must plan the assignments for the organisation. But it is also possible to generate revenues or reduce costs for self-advertisement.

Evidence of success

The Digimobil was displayed at many events in 15 different places in 2019. We had ca. 112,000 visitors, which is a great success for the rural areas of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Difficulties encountered

The project needed to be implemented quickly, resulting in higher costs. The costs of maintenance and especially of the missions are very high as well.
The DigiMobil is not barrier-free.
We should have cooperated more with companies offering digital solutions.

Potential for learning or transfer

The DigiMobil has a great potential for transfer, as the equipment can be adapted to regional/local needs. In many regions there is a need to inform the general public about the chances and needs of digitalisation. The DigiMobil offers an engaging informational campaign using a gamified approach. Digitalisation is an incredibly fast process that brings new aspects to light every day. By educating the population, trust in the digital transformation process can be increased and therefore the regional potential can be harnessed.
At the same time the DigiMobil provides a presentation platform for companies offering digital solutions.
The DigiMobil is a comparatively inexpensive way of distributing information to the target groups.
