Facing high energy consumption and high heating costs, the School Centre Velenje decided to establish a new model of energy management. They combined different actions of energy efficiency and were the finalists of an event called “Energy days” for the most energy efficient institution. They installed the software and the hardware for energy management – first energy bookkeeping.

They upgraded the bookkeeping with the energy monitoring and energy revision. Every energy manager has control of energy consumption through a web application (on smartphone or computer), they can compare consumption in different rooms, between different months, years etc.

The new model of energy management was upgraded by EU project SMART BUILD (February 2012 – January 2015). Organizational measures depend on the results of energy monitoring. In addition to measures such as closing and opening windows and doors, various start-ups, etc., they also change the timetable of lectures and adjust it for better energy efficiency and also use energy from renewable sources and innovative systems. For example, a specific solar absorption system.

Results achieved

The energy consumption of heating energy is lower by more than 50% in 10 years, reduction of electricity consumption in classrooms because of technical investments and organisation actions based on energy monitoring for around 80% and reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) from 1000 ton to 400 ton in 10 years.
