[NEWS] Rogaland: electric developments

A new electric car ferry has been put into traffic on the fjord Jøsenfjorden in Rogaland. MF Nesvik is the sister ferry to MF Hydra, which will be the world's first hydrogen-powered ferry, but MF Nesvik can also be upgraded to hydrogen in the future. Hydra will be put into operation on the same fjord in September 2021.

MF Nesvik has a battery capacity equivalent to 14 batteries of the most powerful Tesla model. The vessel uses 120 kilowatt hours when crossing the fjord. The trip takes 15 minutes. By the summer, charging from land will be in place. Currently, the batteries are charged by two engines running on biodiesel. They make sure that a power failure does not stop the ferry.

The ferry was designed by LMG Marin AS, and built by Westcon Yard in Ølen in Rogaland. The vessel has a capacity of almost 300 passengers and 80 cars. MF Nesvik has a large passenger lounge located under the car deck and just above the waterline, which gives passengers the feeling of gliding across the fjord in total silence.
