In 2030, thanks to a pilot project, hydrogen-powered buses are likely to start running in the city of Brescia. This is the outcome of an agreement between the local LPT agency, Arriva (Deutsche Bahn group) and manufacturers Caetano and Toyota. Moreover, Brescia was recently the last stop of the Caetano H2.City Gold, the hydrogen bus developed by the Portuguese company CaetanoBus in collaboration with Toyota. The tour, which started in Trieste, marked the first appearance of hydrogen buses in Italy, a market considered strategic for the sector. The switch to hydrogen will mean not only a change of vehicle, but of an entire system. The Caetano H2.City Gold is a 12-metre city bus costing €700,000 with a range of over 400 kilometres, able to match the range of conventional diesel buses in a single recharge that takes about 9 minutes to complete. The vehicle has unprecedented environmental benefits, since for a 38-kilogram fill-up of green hydrogen produced from renewable energy sources all it emits is water vapour and thus is 100% emission-free. Industry insiders now take it for granted that hydrogen buses will be one of the building blocks of the future of public transport.
