[ILW4] E-cars misleading myths: a mindset to change

The energy sector strives for the future, which will be more sustainable, digitized and electric, at the e-MOPOLI event, which was held on Wednesday, 12 June 2019, organized by BSC Kranj in Bled, reminded the innovator Andrej Pečjak from the Metron Institute, which, due to the energy transition, has joined with GEN-I. The two partners are, among other things, cooperating on the facility of Slovene Philanthropy, which will soon be energy self-sufficient - also through e-mobility - last year they put together the first e-charging station in Bled, which is not connected to the network. In the continuation, Pečjak also dealt with few myths related to electromobility. 

It is not true that the amount of emissions caused by electricity transport - even if it possibly comes from thermal power plants – is the same as of emissions from traffic on fossil fuels. Also, it is not true that the batteries have a short life span, or that electric vehicles due to battery capacity can only drive short-distance, said Andrej Pečjak. Their retrofitted car drove from Berlin to Karlsruhe on a single charge. This is 826 km with average speed 72km/h. So why do we have on the market cars with the battery autonomy of maximum 500 km and insanely expensive?

He stated, it is also not true, that mechanics will have less work because of the electric vehicles. "Even if electric cars are less complex than gasoline vehicles, their systems will still require maintenance."

Pečjak also hampered the use of pompous news that reported incidents involving e-vehicles because by his opinion, e-vehicles are less inflammable and dangerous than conventional vehicles - except that the ignitions of the latter are not reported.

On the other hand, electric vehicles have other advantages; in addition to causing less emissions, they are also quiet, added Pečjak. However, as he emphasized, electromobility is no longer a matter of technology, but psychology. "Technology is here, but we need to change our mindset" he stressed.
