43 new regional hybrid trains in Italy

Trenitalia will produce 43 new hybrid trains in the Hitachi factories of Pistoia, Naples and Reggio Calabria

Following a European tender, Trenitalia (FS Group) commissioned the construction of 43 regional transport trains to the Hitachi factories of Pistoia, Naples and Reggio Calabria.

The new hybrid trains which can reach a top speed of 160 km/h will be equipped with diesel engines for non-electrified lines, featuring also a pantograph for electrified lines and batteries to travel the last mile on non-electrified lines avoiding the use of fuel.

The increased life of the batteries will allow the trains to approach the historical centres travelling on non-electrified sections of the line, reducing the polluting and noise emissions also during pauses in the stations before departure. A feature that will provide significant benefits both for the environment and for the management costs, in terms of diesel savings.

Services on board will include all the comforts of the new standard of regional transport such as travel information, air conditioning, USB and 220V power sockets, vending machines for snacks and drinks, bicycle and luggage places. Hybrid trains will be built according to the technical specifications necessary to facilitate people with reduced mobility as well.
