[NEWS] Open a new bicycle highway in Rogaland
Rogaland: the first part of a new bicycle highway is open. Is a high-standard cycle path, where cyclists do not come into conflict with other traffic.
Norway’s first bicycle highway is currently being built between Stavanger and Sandnes. The first stretch that was completed, and now open for use, is four kilometres long. This highway is not like a normal cycle path, it is a high-standard cycle path, where cyclists do not come into conflict with other traffic. Here you can cycle quickly and safely.
The bicycle highway will be a total of 13 kilometres long. In a few years, the entire highway will be completed, and the travel time by bicycle between Stavanger and Sandnes will be about 30 minutes. The reason for building a highway for bikers is to transfer business travel from car to bicycle.
The city areas the bicycle highway is meant to serve, has the highest bicycle share in the country, according to the latest national travel survey. The share of cyclists was 8 percent in 2019, up one percentage point from 2014 and 2018. The share of business trips on bike is even higher, 15 per cent. Fewer people drive, and there is a small increase in public transport in the city areas of Rogaland, the survey also says.
"With the opening of the bicycle highway fresh in my mind, I have no doubt that the number of cyclists will continue to increase. It is very gratifying that so many people choose to cycle to work. The journey between Sandnes, Forus and Stavanger will be even faster with the bicycle highway, and I look forward to seeing the entire stretch completed" says county mayor Marianne Chesak.
