Lithuanian power firm “Ignitis Gamyba” aims to install floating solar panels on a lake at a Kruonis pumped-storage hydroelectric plant as part of a small but booming global market for “floatovoltaics”. It will be the first project of its kind in the Baltic region.
Globally, floating photovoltaic power is a rapidly growing technology, led by China. In a novel test, Lithuanian utility Ignitis Gamyba is preparing a tiny floating solar plant on the upper reservoir of the Kruonis pumped-storage hydroelectric plant, backed with 235,000 euros from the Lithuanian Business Support Agency.
