Every year, during a single week in November (usually the last one), thousands of awareness-raising actions about sustainable resource and waste management are taking place all over Europe (and beyond!). This celebration of waste prevention – the biggest campaign on the theme in Europe – is called the European Week for Waste Reduction and has been running for already over 12 years!

The actions carried out under the EWWR address the 3Rs: Reducing waste, Reusing products, Recycling materials — in this order. These are the main Rs (though there are many others) to have in mind when reevaluating consumption habits. SMART WASTE partner Kolding made the EWWR message its and joined the 2020 edition of the initiative.

On 28 November, Kolding organised an action that took the shape of an online event “Green Christmas with Redux: Make Christmas decorations from your old t-shirt”. Focusing on preparing Christmas-related celebrations, a few sustainable tips were shared and a virtual workshop took place on the following topics:

  • How to sort Christmas waste;
  • Sustainable wrapping of Christmas gifts;
  • Virtual workshop with do-it-yourself Christmas decorations from the rubbish bin;
  • Hand in Christmas tree at the recycling site when it suits you.

Christmas is now behind us but why not reading the tips for next Christmas? You can find them here: https://spark.adobe.com/page/TTydYriUT6DNd/

You can also get ready for Christmas 2021 by watching the recording of the virtual workshop and learn how to make decorations from your old t-shirt, transform a jar into a snowy landscape, or turn spruce cones into angels.

And in the meantime, you can also prepare for the EWWR 2021 which will take place from 20 to 28 November 2021. Every year, the EWWR focuses on a different aspect of waste prevention in order to draw attention to high impact areas related to our unsustainable consumption habits as a society. In 2020, the campaign focused on “Invisible waste”, the large amount of waste generated during the manufacturing process of products and that we don’t always see. What will it be for 2021? Keep an eye on the EWWR website to discover the upcoming theme.
