It is with good news that the SMART WASTE project is starting this year: the results of the local evaluations are now available!
What is it all about? To understand the real impact that innovative policy measures have on the effectiveness and sustainability of waste management procedures, each of the five partners had chosen one policy instrument to be assessed and improved. After elaborating a common methodology, partners evaluated the specific support to innovation given by the selected policy instruments concerning:
- Waste streams involved;
- Step of the European waste hierarchy step;
- Specific kind of EU Structural Fund and/or local funding support;
- Quantitative evaluation of policy instrument capacity to reach environmental targets if the policy instrument included such targets.
The results, highlighting positive impacts and shortcomings for each territory, have been detailed in 5 reports which have just been published. In addition, each partner has suggested some further steps that could be taken to improve the policy instrument under scrutiny.
Read the evaluation of the following policy instruments:
- Kolding’s Municipal Waste Management Plan 2022 – 2030
- Lithuania’s multi-fund Operational Programme (OP) for investing European Structural and Investment funds 2014-2020, measure 05.2.1-APVA-K-009
- Bulgaria’s Operational Programme Environment (OPE) 2014-2020, Priority Axis 2 – Waste
- Tuscany Region’s Operational Programme for European Regional Development Funds 2014 – 2020
- Apeldoorn’s Municipal Waste Management Plan 2018 – 2025
This step was essential for partners in the preparation of their Action Plans. As a quick reminder, Action Plans are roadmaps showing how partners will exploit the lessons learnt and exchange of experience at work since the beginning of the project and improve their policy instruments. This summer the SMART WASTE partners will already start implementing these Action Plans and bring more innovation within waste management procedures.
While you wait until the Action Plans are published, why not have a look at the Good Practices identified. We are sure they will also inspire you!
