The Maccarese farm, located 20 kilometers from Rome, was founded in 1930 and privatised in 1998. It is one of the largest farms in Italy with its 3,240 hectares of land. The farm is specialised in cultivating various crops, such as maize, barley and durum wheat. In addition to this, it has the largest dairy herd in Italy: 3,600 Friesian cows and 1,250 lactating cows.
Environmental issues and circular economy have been important parts of the farm's activities for many years. In 2010 and 2012, the Maccarese Agricultural company built two biogas plants to produce green electricity:
- 625 Kw biogas plant that produces 4.500.000 Kw net/year. It uses cattle slurry (mc 130/day) and silage (22 tons/day). It is equipped with a preloading tank, a torch, a feeding system for the loading of silage and uses a Jenbacker J312 engine.
- 999 Kw biogas plan that is fed exclusively with cereal silage, and is able to produce 8,750,000 Kw net/year. It is equipped with an overloading tank, a torch, a feeding system for loading silage and uses a Jenbacker J416 engine.
