The Hungarian Government announced a plan to procure 3,000 electric buses until 2022. Domestic supply will be able to provide for 50% of the demand in the country which was a mass producer not long ago when Ikarus alone created 13,000 vehicles in 1984, making it the fourth-biggest bus manufacturer of the time.
From the 1 January 2022, settlements with more than 25,000 inhabitants will only be allowed to procure electric buses, which will require them to catch up quickly with the necessary facilities to accommodate such a big technological change. The Ministry for Innovation and Technology expects that these changes will boost domestic capacities, as the earlier attempts to jumpstart this sector had not been succeeded despite the long traditions.
