The Local Energy Management Agency of Almada, AGENEAL, in conjunction with Almada City Council, organized an Import Workshop for the EMPOWER project on 29th of May 2019 in Almada.

The workshop focused on the topic of “Innovative Financing of Low Carbon Technologies for Smart and Circular Cities”. Manuel Nina from GoParity – Sustainable Development S.A., in Portugal, provided a presentation on PontoEnergia: The “one stop shop” for Sustainable Energy Investment and François Corre (Lorient City Council) provided a presentation on PV Crowdfunding Scheme: Renting solar panels from local citizens.

On the topic of Smart and Circular Cities, Sonia Sotero Muñiz (Santander City Council) provided a presentation on Santander: Towards the Smart City Paradigm and Nuno Gi, from Mota-Engil Renewing S.A., in Portugal, provided a presentation on Smart Synergy: An Integrated Vision for Smart Cities.

The Workshop was highly participative and the speakers contributed with relevant insights and experience for the discussion on the opportunities for implementing innovative mechanisms for financing EE and RES projects and the approach used for sketching a smart city model.

As a direct result of the workshop, Almada City Council will assess the possibility of replicating the financial mechanism implemented by the city of Lorient, for developing RES projects in public buildings. In that sense, the first step will be to develop a pilot in a school building run by the Municipality and evaluate its applicability in Almada.
