To know more about ‘Ghost City’ of Belchite

Belchite Viejo is the ‘Ghost City’ testimony of the Civil war in Spain. The battle of Belchite took place in 1937; the town was on the border between the republican state and the fascist forces and became the site of one of the bloodiest and most important battles of the whole Spanish war. To slow down the Nationalist advance in the north, the republican front intended to occupy the town, attacking it during a fifteen-day siege. Belchite ended almost devastated. Later Franco's army came back and reconquered the place, keeping the old and destroyed town intact as a warning for future enemies. By now it remains exactly as it was 80 years ago, as a lively memory of the battle and what should have never happened. This city is a clear representation of tangible heritage.
