Hundreds of participants virtually attended the European Circular Economy Stakeholder Conference during its first digital edition on 3 and 4 November. On the first day, plenary discussions focused on the European Circular Economy Action Plan, on making sustainable products the norm, and on the potential of the circular economy for a green recovery. Eight thematic sessions took place on the second day covering circular themes ranging from construction to food waste to procurement and roadmapping.
LCA4Regions was a guest speaker during the workshop dedicated to circular cities and regions, organised by ACR+. The aim of the workshops was to go beyond waste management indicators for circular economy in cities and regions. Thus, Fritz Balkau, on behalf of LCA4Regions, presented the relevance of life cycle thinking to cities’ initiatives on circular economy. After watching the project’s introduction video as testimony of its progress, participants discovered two examples of life cycle methods - LCA to look more deeply into the various conversion options for regional anaerobic digestion of food waste, and then the relevance of materials flow analysis (MFA) to better understand the volumes and origins of regional waste flows. Both applications have direct relevance to the design of circular economy options. In fact, the basic steps in the standard LCA model make a perfect set of criteria for structuring circular economy models for cities and regions.
