The WINPOL partners met for the last time on 21-22 September to prepare the final months of the project. They were hosted by the Municipality of Heraklion.
The Vice-Mayor of Circular Economy, Environment and Sports of the Municipality of Heraklion, Mr. Konstantinos Vardavas, welcomed the participants to Heraklion on the first day. He emphasized the important experience and benefits that the Municipality of Heraklion gained from its participation in the WINPOL and similar projects. A representant of the Region of Crete, Vice-Governor of Environment, Mr. Nikos Xylouris also addressed a greeting.
The heart of this final meeting was the progresses made by partners in implementing their Action Plans.
On the second day, the partners visited the facilities of the Hellenic Recovery Recycling Corporation in Heraklion. There, they had the opportunity to see a robotic system which is able to recover numerous recyclable materials efficiently and at a low cost using intelligent, autonomous robots capable of identifying, categorizing and physically sorting recyclables into separate bins according to their type of material. Partners then visited the facilities of the company "BIOENERGIAKI KRITIS S.A.", where they were presented advanced technologies for the management of organic waste (from slaughterhouses, livestock and poultry units, expired food, etc.) the utilization of the produced heat and the innovative biological treatment system of the liquid digested residue.
