The visit to Imola was a great inspiration, in particular when it comes to the side-load containers with electronic locks used by the Italian municipality.
With most of the good practices already identified, partners are already thinking of the changes that they could bring to their local policies to improve their waste management system and increase their performances towards higher sustainability. Slowly the first lines of action plans, to be implemented in 2021, are drawn. Which practices caught the attention of each project partner? Which changes are currently being assessed? What is the current impact of WINPOL at local level?

The visit to Imola was a great inspiration, in particular when it comes to the side-load containers with electronic locks used by the Italian municipality. The system is interesting for the collection of food waste but also for users to deposit small waste, such as cigarette buts or bags with dogs’ poops, without unlocking the container by simply using small holes on the side. EMULSA is also further investigating the implementation of the pop-up proximity collection points and the use of a box for donating objects for reuse noticed during the Thematic Seminar in Antwerp.
If developed these new solutions will be integrated to the Municipal Waste Management Plan (MVMP) which regulates and frames EMULSA’s work for sanitation and waste management in the city of Gijón. In this way, the MWMP will be executed in an innovative way to improve the processes already in force. The MWMP is a live document which gives space for innovation as some of the measures are setting quality objectives giving the possibility to find the best solution to it. If a pay-as-you-throw system or the establishment of ecopoints are already mentioned by the MWMP, they are not defined in a specific way or with details. WINPOL will allow these details to be brought and help analysing different systems and alternatives before introducing them.
